I've heard this book called "the pumper's Bible," and it probably has as universal appeal to pumpers as the Bible once had in the world. Walsh provides a great deal of easily accessible information so that anyone who uses an insulin pump (or even just uses insulin) will get something from it. My only caveat is that the "rules" are like many other "rules" - they have their exceptions. All the recommended numbers/percentages are based on averages. So, for example, if you eat a low-carb diet, the percentage of total daily insulin use made up by one's basal dose is higher than he recommends.

Even if you don't pump, buy this book. Insights on how to adjust your basals are priceless even if you use Lantus and Novo. I've never not found an answer to a problem that isn't in this book. Get it, read it, add years to your life.
Great how-to on adjusting basal, bolus, correction February 1, 2008 Margaret P. (Boulder, CO USA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
"Pumping Insulin" is an amazingly good book on insulin pumps. It contains clear instructions on how to adjust basal, bolus, and correction rates as insulin needs change. These tables are particularly valuable for parents of Type 1 diabetics going through puberty. When my daughter got out of her honeymoon period, her A1C scores went from 6.6 to 8.7. "Pumping Insulin" gave me the information and tools I needed to bring her A1C back down to 7.4 in 3 months, despite further growth spurts. One chapter has estimates relating total insulin requirements to approximate settings for Basal, Bolus, and Corrections -- while intended for "starting settings", this information works well for re-adjusting your pump's settings when everything is really off. The Basal rate checks are clearly described and tell you exactly how to adjust your pump settings. One chapter has suggestions on the lines of "if you are seeing this, try that".
Excellent insulin pumper's reference manual October 24, 2007 Susan C. Cox (Reston VA)
I read the book front to back when I first got my pump, but since then, I've gone back repeatedly for specific questions. The answers are always there! Well organized, good depth of information, and I enjoy the matter of fact writing style.
